Steele Valenzuela, MS
Omaha Tribe of Nebraska
Biostatistician

Steele Heaven Valenzuela is a biostatistician at Oregon Health & Science University. He is originally from Decatur, Nebraska, a small town bordering the reservation of the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska – his mother’s tribe. Steele came to OHSU to research Medicaid insurance for low-income and vulnerable populations - and, by chance - stumbled upon the beginnings of NNACoE. As a statistician, he assists his colleagues in study design and quantitative methods, while answering research questions with data. Having navigated many “white spaces” in academia, Steele is extremely proud to be a part of a team of Indigenous and Native colleagues striving towards the goal of increasing Native representation in health sciences. When he is not debugging code or running statistical models, he is playing ping pong, tending to his garden and flowers, or attempting to complete a new adventure or fighting video game.
